Protect Your Deck

When you added a deck to your North York real estate, you put in a significant investment. Anyone building a deck know that it costs a lot of money, even if you are just putting in a little one. Not only that, you are counting on your deck to add to the appeal of your home, and its intrinsic value. Finally, your deck has been built for the enjoyment of you and your household. You want it to look good and be a nice place to retreat to during great weather.

All that adds up to a need to make sure your deck in Scrivener Square Toronto or anywhere else stays in good shape for as long as possible. There are a lot of different ways to do this, the first of course being the addition of some kind of protective layer to keep as much moisture as possible off of the actual wood. You have a couple of choices, in the form of sealants or selecting the more paint like material of stain.

Overall, a sealant will provide better protection than stain. It is waterproof by its very nature, and neither rain, snow, nor sleet will make it through once it is applied. Sealant will also have the benefit of making the deck in the back of your Islington Village home feel great to the touch. Stain tends to let defects in the wood stand out under your feet, and that gets worse over time. Finally, sealant will also last for eternity; stain needs to be re-applied every couple of years.

Of course, the big problem with sealant is that it is usually very expensive, and also difficult to apply. If you are a green conscious resident of Markham real estate, then there are environmental considerations with sealant as well. Namely, that durability does indeed last; for centuries after we're all dead in fact. So if you don't mind re-applying and want to avoid high costs both to the pocket book and environmentally, then stain is your best choice.

Whichever protective coating you choose, there are some rules when applying which will help it to work its best. The first is to make sure that your deck is absolutely dry before you put down your sealant or paint on the stain. Any little pockets of moisture that are still in the wood will be trapped otherwise, and will rot the deck out from underneath the protective covering. It will take time, and will be localized, but it will happen.

Also make sure that your deck is very clean before you put on that sealant or stain. The appeal of a deck on Kitchener Waterloo investment properties won't be helped if it seems bumpy or the job is not well done.
